Can I Run a Lean Office?

One of the best parts of using the Lean system is that it has a lot of potentials when it comes to standardization, and in minimizing the amount of waste that is found in your processes. Just like when you are setting goals, when you use Lean to set up the right work parameters, ones that are standardized by this system, you will be able to answer the questions that you need about the process. Some of the questions would be - Who is going to follow through on the process after outlining it? How many people does it take? What the results will be at the end? And What metrics of success are needed here? These questions must all be answered ahead of time to help guarantee that the measures you add here don’t end up creating some new problems rather than solving the ones that you have.

This kind of standardization is not designed to ensure that the processes are complete as quickly as possible. Instead, it is going to be more about utilizing the practices that are the most effective to help ensure that they get done with the same amount of reliability each and every time. You will also need to remember that the standard practices are going to change as time goes on, as you find new ways to improve productivity, quality, and safety. This is why you should never rely on just one type of standardization, or it is going to hold you back.

Now that has been said, it is important to avoid falling into a trap of picking out the idea of standardization solely for the sake of doing it. Instead, it can be important to consider whether this is the best choice for you. You can figure this out by looking at the processes that are already in place, and asking yourself if they would be done with less waste and at a higher quality if you added the standardization to it.
